“Black Gives Way to the Blues” was a challenge to use all the blue scraps I had in my stash. My scraps were beginning to take over my fabric collection and I had to do something with them. I throw away very little fabric, only those pieces I decide are too small to make anything.
The really dark patches aren’t black, they’re actually midnight blue. There’s no black fabric in this quilt at all. The title comes from the fact that black is a color that it everyone seems to wear, I rarely wear it. Blue is my go-to color. I’m pushing black out of the way! I pulled all the blue scraps, dumped them on the table, and started sewing pieces together. I arranged pieces on the design wall and realized they needed pops of bright colors. Using color theory, orange is the complement to blue so I added some of those. I chose yellow because yellow is analogous to orange and I thought would add an extra pop of color.
The funny thing about this quilt is that I every time it is displayed in an art show it gets hung upside down because I mistakenly sewed the hanging sleeve at the wrong end. Instead of removing it, I sewed another hanging sleeve to the top. Now it can be hung in both directions.
